South Africa’s impressive showing at this year’s Paralympics continued after the track team brought home 3 medals in the space of 24 hours. There was a gold, a silver, and a bronze in two different sprinting events for each of our stars. Let’s recap who won what.
gold - charl du toit
Du Toit came first in the 100 m race for the cerebral palsied in an extremely narrow victory. The runner edged Egypt's Mostafa Fathalla who had to settle for silver.
bronze - fanie van der merwe
If Charl’s victory was narrow, then Fanie’s 3rd place finish was by a hair’s breadth! The sprinter lost out to Fathalla by a thousandth of a second (that’s 0.001 seconds!).
silver - ilse hayes
Ilse Hayes ran an impressive 11.91 seconds in the ladies' 100 m but finished second in behind Ukraine's Lielia Adzhametova
silver - ntando mahlangu
14 year old Ntando Mahlangu won a silver medal in the men’s 200 m competing against people more than twice his age. He lost to 40 year old Richard Whitehead from the UK.
