nintendo says mario is no longer a plumber

Mario, the character from the Nintendo video games, has just been promoted for the first time in 36 years. The popular fictional character has always been known to be a plumber, but according to Nintendo, that's about to change.
 

 
On its Japanese website, Nintendo writes: "Mario was once a plumber … but that was a long time ago," before adding:
 
 "All around sporty, whether it's tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago."
 
So if he's no longer a plumber, what exactly is he?
