With the release of his newest album, The Thrill of It All, Sam Smith has been sitting down for a number of revealing interviews. Probably his most revealing and simultaneously weird one was with the Associated Press.
Smith has spoken on George Michael before but what was new this time is a gift he remembers receiving from him. "He sent me flowers one year and he was in touch a few times, and said that he liked what I did." Sadly, they never got to meet each other but Smith says that he "holds a really special place in my heart" beacuse "he was the reason I decided I wanted to do pop music."
Another pop star who stole his heart is Rihanna. "She inspires me a lot because I think she's just unapologetically herself and that's something that I'm trying to do. I want to be a role model, but I don't want to be a perfect role model," he says. "I think we need (people like Rihanna) more because no one's a robot."
But the list goes on. He stans Queen Bey as well. "I saw Beyonce open the Lemonade tour in Miami," he remembers. "I was so obsessed. I had to go to bed afterward because I was so exhausted. I couldn't even go gay clubbing. I was too tired."
So what about upcoming pop stars? Could we see Sam Smith mentoring new talent on, say, The Voice, some day? "I don't know if I'd like that. I don't really watch those shows," he said. "I think they're amazing if you're a singer and you don't write."
Okay, then how about start his own label to produce his own pop stars? "See I would never do that," he said. "I'm just not a money guy. ...It's all about the music, and the feeling it gives me. ... Every time I'm singing onstage, I'm like near orgasm."
Well, then that's that on that.
